Pastured Beef Benefits

If you’ve been reading our site for awhile, you’ll know we’re all about whole, healthy foods. That’s why, when we stumbled across this free download, we were really excited to share it with our readers:

What Do Food Labels Really Mean?

Clicking that link will take you to a terrific article about animal welfare food labels, such as “Grassfed,” “Free-Range,” and “Cage-Free.” Some people might be astonished to learn how “cage-free” chickens really live:

caged, cage-free, and pastured laying hens

The page also includes a free downloadable PDF called The Grass-Fed Primer. The 20-page primer answers questions like:

  • What does grass-fed mean?
  • How do I know if meat is grass-fed?
  • Why are feedlots bad for us and for the animals?
  • What are the environmental concerns of raising beef?
The information is well-cited, referencing scientific papers, as well as well-respected articles in the field of agriculture, economics, and animal welfare.
Grass-fed meat and dairy products are not only better for the environment and the animals themselves, but also for us; grass-fed animal products offer higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid, and Vitamin E. If organic, grass-fed animal products are selected, they will also be free of antibiotics, growth hormones, and toxic chemical treatments added during processing (see: “Pink Slime,” and Jamie Oliver’s video decrying it; nauseatingly, the beef industry has a counter-facts website, full of ridiculous “facts” about this toxic product.)

We also recommend Fresh The Movie, which is also available on Netflix.

Here at Black Chicken Host, we’ll stick to our organic, humanely raised and slaughtered, grass-fed beef and chicken from Creswick Farms.

We encourage you to read the article, and the downloadable PDF file, especially if your family is not buying pastured meat. We’re always happy to share our experiences and expertise in this area – please feel free to ask any questions, or offer your thoughts!

  • I can’t believe that link. Now I just need to figure out my money for meats and eggs. Sigh. It’s going to be expensive but I guess I just have to pay more for the good stuff. Thanks for sharing!

    • Adrienne, Creswick is right in your neck of the woods – I bet they deliver to a location near you. 🙂 It is more expensive, but it’s worth every penny – not just because I know they treat the animals with respect, but also because it’s safer, and it just plain tastes incredible. 🙂 Thanks for commenting!

    • Hi Kevin – The things big business does to our food are reprehensible. Happy to share the information, and we hope it helps you to make healthy choices. 🙂
